I Press On – A Gospel Song About Persevering When the Room Is Empty
The Story Behind I Press On
This song was birthed on a Sunday morning I will never forget.
At the time, we are a brand-new church—small, faithful, and still finding our footing. That morning, no one attended service. The sanctuary was completely empty. On top of that, my wife was sick and unable to be there. It was just me and my son, sitting in a quiet church that felt heavier than usual.
In that moment, the familiar thoughts crept in—the feeling of failure, the questions of purpose, the silent struggle many pastors face but rarely say out loud: Am I really doing the right thing?
As I went to get dressed and put on my robe, standing alone with those thoughts, the Holy Spirit met me there—not with an explanation, not with a sermon—but with words.
“I press on.”
Those words weren’t born out of excitement. They were born out of resolve. A reminder that obedience doesn’t depend on attendance, applause, or visible results. Faith presses forward even when the seats are empty and the answers are unclear.
After service, I wrote the lyrics down and added more to them. What began as a private moment of encouragement became a declaration of perseverance. That is how I Press On was born.
This song is for anyone who has ever shown up and felt unseen, stayed faithful without affirmation, and chosen obedience when quitting would have been easier.
