Behind the Song: But I Press On — A Song for Depression, Fear, and Midnight Battles

When Faith Is Tested in the Dark
There are moments in life when faith isn’t questioned in daylight — it’s questioned at midnight.
Midnight is where depression speaks loudest. Midnight is where fear feels closest. Midnight is where prayers feel unanswered and strength feels borrowed.
But I Press On was written for those moments. This song was not created for people who have already won the battle — it was created for those still in the fight, still breathing, still believing, and still standing even when standing feels exhausting.
The Heart Behind the Song
As a pastor, I have walked alongside people in seasons where:
- Depression tried to convince them they were alone
- Fear whispered that tomorrow would not be better
- Faith felt real, but fragile
What I have learned is this: Many believers do not quit God — they simply get tired.
This song is a declaration made in the middle of the struggle, not at the end.
“I made up my mind… I’m holdin’ on…”
That line reflects a spiritual decision — not driven by emotions, but anchored in trust.
Addressing Depression Without Shame
Depression is not a lack of faith. It is often the weight of carrying too much for too long.
When the song declares:
“Depression tried to drown me in the midnight hour…”
It names what many worship spaces avoid acknowledging — that believers can love God deeply and still struggle internally.
This song affirms a simple but powerful truth: God’s presence does not leave us because our strength fades. Grace does not shame weakness — it walks beside it.
Confronting Fear with Faith
Fear does not always scream. Sometimes it whispers:
- “You’re not strong enough.”
- “This will never change.”
- “You’ve seen enough disappointment.”
But the song answers fear directly:
“Faith stood up and said, ‘I’ve seen enough!’”
Faith does not deny reality — it refuses to surrender hope.
Midnight Battles and Quiet Victories
Midnight battles are fought when no one is watching. No applause. No explanations. Just endurance.
The repeated confession — “But I press on…” — is not arrogance. It is survival.
Scripture reminds us:
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:8

A Pastoral Word Before You Go
If you are still here, still breathing, still believing — even quietly — that is not failure. That is faith.
You may not feel strong. You may not see tomorrow. But you pressed on today.
And today matters.
Prayer:
Lord, give me grace for the next step — not the whole journey.
